Alpine Hiking Tour
Day 1:
Zurich. Arrival into Zurich Airport I will be there with sign in hand waiting for you just outside the customs doors. After checking into our Zurich hotel we will head into the city for a full tour with highlights on a ferry ride down the Limmat River, Sprungli Chocolate Confection store, 3 main Cathedrals of Zurich, and a stroll down Niederdorf Street. After viewing the city from the University platform we will have a great dinner together. (Reason for 1st night in Zurich is to get over the jetlag before starting our big hikes.)
Day 2: Schynige Platte- Faulhorn Alp Hotel
We leave Zurich early in the morning on a train headed for the Alps. Our first stop will be the Unesco World Heritage site of old town Bern, Switzerland’s capital. After our quick city tour we will board the famous Schnyige Platte narrow gauge cogwheel train which will put us on our first Alpine trail. The hike will offer panoramic views of the lakes below and the towering Alps above. This hike should take over 3.5 hours to complete from Schnyige Platte to Faulhorn Alp Hotel. This is Europe’s oldest Alpine Hotel where we’ll have dinner and enjoy the evening views and get a goodnights rest.
Day 3:Faulhorn- First
What a beautiful hike we will be on today. Leaving the Faulhorn we will venture deeper into the Berner Oberlands. Our destination is the First Moutain Guesthouse which will be our resting point for the evening. This hike is 6.3 miles and we will cross a diverse terrain with one of the highlights Bachalp Lake. This lake will mirror the surrounding Alps and will be such a picturesque view. Once we arrive into First we can check in at the Guesthouse and then have a little adventure for those up for it. First offers a zipline down the mountain. There is also the First cliff walk that is a must do! There is also the option for other hikes or riding trotti bikes. We’ll have a great dinner and good nights rest.
Day 4:First – Wetterhorn Hotel
The start of this hike will begin at First with a gentle climb to Grosse Scheidegg. Here we can stop and enjoy the views and have a nice lunch. We will then have a beautiful decent which will lead from Grosse Scheidegg down a trail that winds along foothills of the Wetterhorn Alp. The views of the surrounding Alps will seem to rise up out of the ground. We will cover roughly 6.4 miles of Alpine trails today. We will check into Wetterhorn Hotel that sits at the base of the Wetterhorn and enjoy the evening views along with a delicious dinner.
Day 5: Hotel Wetterhorn- Baeregg
From the hotel Wetterhorn we’ll hike on a wide forest road. We’ll cross a bridge spanning the torrent issuing from the Oberer Grindelwald Gletscher. We’ll then take the footpath up to Restaurant Milchbach and continue on the trail along the Mättenberg and then enter the 150m long and illuminatet Breitlouwine tunnel. Out of the tunnel the path continues to the mountain station of Pfingstegg Bahn. It is here where we can stop for lunch along with the possibility to ride an Alpine slide! From there we’ll continue on the trail to Berghaus Bäregg. After checking into the Berghaus Baregg for those need a bit more climbing there are optional glacier trails above the Guesthouse. A great dinner along with amazing views will make for a wonderful evening.
Day 6: Baregg Guesthouse- Alpiglen
From the Baregg Berghaus we will take the trail down to Marmorbruch where we will hike to the famous Eiger Trail. Along the Eiger north face, over blooming alpine meadows you have a wonderful view of Grindelwald, the Schwarzhorn and Faulhorn. After a few bends in the trail we head in the direction of Glacier Gorge. We will have a chance to hike through the glacier gorge. This is a remarkable experience as the path through the canyon has you walking through tunnels and suspended platforms above the melted glacier waters. We will have lunch here at the glacier gorge. From there its onto the Alpiglen Mountain House where we can check in and have a great dinner and good night’s sleep.
Day 7: Alpiglen- Wengen
We’ll get an early start today and hike up the Eiger Trail that sits at the foothills of the mighty Eiger Alps. Our climb will take us to Kleine Scheidegg that will offer views into both Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen Valley. It is here where we will board an early bird train for the famous Jungfrau Joch. This historic one of a kind train ride will take us literally through the mountain to the highest train station in Switzerland. Here we can experience the views of the Aletsch Glacier, Switzerland's largest glacier. We can also go through the ice palace which is an entire room made of ice that has been carved into the glacier. This experience is truly once in a lifetime. After taking in the views we will board the train back to Kleine Scheidegg where we will have a late lunch and get back on the trail to Wengen. This gradual downhill hike with offer some incredible views of Lauterbrunnen Valley below. We will then check into our hotel in Wengen and enjoy a delicious dinner. The evening will be free to enjoy this quaint Alpine village and possibly get a little souvenir shopping done.
Day8: Wengen-Zurich
We will start this day with a morning hike down from Wengen into the village of Lauterbrunnen. From Lauterbrunnen we will take a cable car ride and then a cogwheel train ride into the village of Murren. For those wanting a little more adventure and a true heart pounding experience there is the option to go on the Via Ferrata. This K3 rated trail has you strapped in a harness and takes you out onto the cliff sides of Murren. With thousands of feet between you and the Lauterbrunnen valley these view will take your breath away. If heights are not your thing and you decide not to go on the Via Ferrata trail, you can spend your time there in the Village of Murren. With quaint shops, cafes, and restaurants there is a lot that can be seen in this beautiful village.
To celebrate our accomplishments and to soothe our aching bodies we will spend the early afternoon at the spa in Murren. The spa includes access to their indoor pool, jacuzzi, solarium, sauna, and massage. After our relaxing spa experience we will then visit Trummelbach Falls in Lauterbrunnen Valley. These glacier waterfalls hidden in the valley cliffs will be sure to take your breath away. It will then be time to say goodbye to the beautiful Berner Oberland Alps and board a train in Lauterbrunnen. We will take the famous Golden Pass on our way to the city of Luzern. Here we will visit the city and have dinner, afterwards we are just a short train ride to Zurich where we will check into our hotel for the night.
Day9:
I will help the group get to the airport after a quick chocolate stop before your departure.
